The civil services are still one of the most dignified and exciting career option one can choose. The qualifying exams to get into Civil Services are conducted mainly in two phases -- the IAS Prelims and the IAS Mains, by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
The pattern of these exams has been changed in recent years. The Prelims is now called the Civil Services Aptitude Test (The C-SAT). The Mains exam is designed to test the aspirant's academic intelligence as well as his or her capability to correlate and co-ordinate the knowledge in a proper, innovative manner. It consists of nine papers, all descriptive type, which contains -- * One among the 22 Indian Languages included in the VIIIth Schedule of the Constitution to be chosen by the IAS aspirant * English a qualifying paper * Essay in the medium that the aspirant has chosen * General Studies * Any two subjects chosen by the aspirant from the list of optional subjects
As it can be seen, the syllabus is vast and time is a prime factor here. So while preparing for the Mains, the aspirant should keep in mind to prepare smart, not hard. A smart and well planned preparation is all it needs. Here are a few tips about how to prepare and clear the IAS Mains exam --
1. Proper Planning - Aspirants need to start preparing at least one year or ten months prior to the exam. You need to get along with right things to garner a competitive edge. Get the right study materials. Solve previous year question papers. Filter the information. Filter out the irrelevant part and soak up the rest.
2. Keep yourself updated -- The English language, and general studies -- these are the two areas you need focus upon right from the beginning. To garner knowledge regarding these areas, make a habit of reading at least one English newspaper regularly. Note down the important points, related to current affairs etc. Try and correlate various issues with your own perspective and summarize.
3. Test yourself -- The IAS mains exam is a test of both physical and mental endurance. Test yourself regularly by solving previous year papers.
All said and done, getting into the Civil Services is not an easy task. Even clearing the IAS Prelims, you need to clear another hurdle that is the IAS-Mains. You need to have that passion combined with rigorous hard work, and success is yours.
